Skin pigmentation is the colour of the skin, which is determined by the amount of melanin, a pigment produced by melanocytes, present in all skins. It can vary from person to person, depending on genetics and environmental factors.
Common pigmentations include:
Melasma: It is a common condition marked by brown or grey patches on the skin, particularly on the face, which is caused by hormonal changes or sun exposure, most common in women.
Freckles: They are small, flat, brown spots on the skin that are usually caused by sun exposure or genetics.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH): This occurs when the skin undergoes inflammation or trauma and responds by producing excess pigmentation.
Age spots: They are flat, brown spots that occur on the skin as a result of aging, sun damage, or genetics.
The causes of skin pigmentation are numerous, but some common ones include genetics, sun exposure, hormonal changes, aging, and trauma.
Preventing skin pigmentation involves protecting the skin from the sun by wearing sunscreen at all times, protective clothing, and staying in the shade as much as possible. Avoiding tanning beds and minimizing sun exposure during peak hours can also help.
Treating skin pigmentation depends on the severity of the condition. Topical products containing ingredients such as hydroquinone, retinoids, and alpha hydroxy acids can be effective in reducing pigmentation. In-office treatments such as chemical peels, laser therapy, and microdermabrasion can also be used to treat pigmentation.
It is advisable to consult an Aesthetic doctor or a Dermatologist before starting any treatment to ensure that it is safe and effective.
